"Two more minutes!"
"Mother," said Seishirou, with great irritation, "will you please stop counting down the minutes until Subaru-kun dies?"
Setsuka fluttered her eyelashes. "I just want to meet the one that my son loves above all others." She pouted a little. "Including me."
He rolled his eyes, annoyed that she had no plans on giving him any privacy once Subaru finally passed over. Honestly, she'd have all of eternity... besides, he didn't like that look in her eyes. At all. Every instinct in him (that he remembered from corporeal life, anyway) screamed for him to take Subaru far, far away from her.
"One minute!" trilled Setsuka, clapping her small hands in excitement, and Seishirou's heart (well, what passed for a heart over here) began to beat faster. He'd been consigned to watching Subaru for many years now, watching him train a nephew as Sumeragi Head, watching him carry out his duty as Sakurazukamori, but without choosing an heir. The last Sakurazukamori, just as Seishirou had intended. Guilt nagged at him, reminding him that Subaru had been forced to lead such a lonely life all because of him, but even after sixty years of eternity, Seishirou was adept at shrugging off emotions.
"Ten... nine... eight..."
Except for one.
"Seven... six... five..."
He could see Subaru's tear-stained face in his mind, his last mortal sight.
"Four... three... two..."
Seishirou tensed.
"One!"
"SUBARUUUUUU!" came a gleeful shriek, and both former Sakurazukamori were bowled over by one determined ball of energy. Hokuto launched herself at her brother, tackling him to the ground. "Subaru, it's so GOOD to see you! I've been waiting for so long! WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?!" By the time Hokuto got around to her last question, the dust in the air had finally cleared, revealing...
"Ooh, he's even prettier in person," Setsuka piped up, interrupting Seishirou's Romantic Moment (tm).
"Thank you, Mother," Seishirou said through gritted teeth.
Subaru was thoroughly (and rather attractively) bewildered as Setsuka glided over and kissed him lightly. "Such a lovely picture you two make," she positively purred. Hokuto stuck her tongue out, used to Setsuka's antics, and explained, "That's Sei-chan's mother. Where IS your lover, anyway? SEIIII-CHAAAAAAN!"
And, made a little impatient by sixty years of separation, Subaru elbowed his way out from his sister's embrace and Seishirou simply picked his mother up and set her down, and suddenly they were right in front of each other and they exchanged one long look for one long instant before quite suddenly they were kissing each other as if nothing else mattered. And, for those two, nothing else did.
"Whoooooo, GO SEI-CHAN!" Hokuto cheered, summoning pom-poms from somewhere and jumping up and down. "Go go go go GOOOO!" Setsuka beamed, watching the pretty picture.
Some minutes passed.
"Oh my," said Hokuto, going rather red.
"Not having to breathe comes in handy," Setsuka observed, still beaming.
A few more minutes passed.
"I... I think I better go," Hokuto said at last, and fled, leaving her little brother and his lover to dubious privacy. Setsuka decided she had waited long enough. Walking over to the entangled pair, she tapped her son on the shoulder. "May I play, too?"
Fifteen seconds later, and with still no response, Setsuka stepped on Seishirou's foot.
"Ow!"
"Boys," Setsuka began, hands on her hips, "how can you be so selfish as to not let someone else play, too? I thought I raised you better, Seishirou. And Subaru, your behavior has always lead me to believe that you are a polite person! I am shocked, shocked." She covered her mouth to hide a giggle; she did so like to play the scolding little mother.
Predictably, her son reacted first, and just as predictably, his territorial stubbornness reared its head. "Mine," Seishirou said simply, and drew Subaru closer. Subaru had gone bright red at the realization that someone else had been watching them, but this caused him to look up so adoringly at Seishirou that Setsuka gave them a few moments' peace so that she could watch the pretty way his eyes lit up.
Size and weight had no meaning in the afterlife, so when she tired of watching, Setsuka simply reached out and tugged Subaru away, draping her arms around him, smiling angelically at Seishirou. "Another lovely couple. Oh, Seishirou, you must think so. I raised you better than this, I know."
She barely managed to hide her glee as she watched her son's sense of ownership and his sense of aesthetics war against each other. She knew what conclusion he would reach. "What a good boy you are," she said approvingly, and felt Subaru stiffen.
"Seishirou-san...?"
"Just hold still, Subaru-kun," Seishirou said, and then slid both hands underneath Subaru's shirt. Taking her cue from this, Setsuka slid one arm off of Subaru and began to undo his pants.
"AHHH! What are you DOING?!"
"Just stay still, dear."
"Listen to Mother, Subaru-kun."
Subaru gaped at both of them for a few moments. Setsuka took the opportunity to rid him of his pants. Boxers with little puppy dogs on them! She and Seishirou had time to exchange an amused glance before Subaru began flailing his arms in an effort to get away, though he was effectively pinned by the arms around him. "Seishirou-san, what's going ON?!"
"Sharing is a family tradition, Subaru-kun," Seishirou replied solemnly, and then peeled off Subaru's shirt. "As a former Sakurazukamori, you're considered part of the family. Besides, we're practically married, anyway! Hokuto-chan gave us her full blessing, after all."
"..." Subaru went, as a tiny portion of his brain began to wonder whether the eccentric veterinarian had been only an act or was actually an aspect of Seishirou's personality.
Setsuka, ever the opportunist, yanked down Subaru's boxers.
Seishirou, who knew his both of them far too well, took the opportunity to silence Subaru's protests with a kiss, and to establish possession. Setsuka sighed a little and pouted a bit and then went to help Seishirou get his clothes off. Even if Seishirou had seen his pretty little boy first, she had seen her son first, and there was nothing Subaru could do about that.
Tradition was tradition, after all.
